1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the videos Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism and pop : Art of the 50’s and 60’s. I chose these two videos because I am very interested in the topic of expressionism. I didn't know what the word meant or what it idd for art, but I have heard this before I am just not familiar with it. I am however very familiar with abstract art, it's my favorite type of art, I love both drawing and looking at abstract art.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Expressionism- This video was about the color and the emotions they represent in art. All colors give you unconditionally different feelings and those feelings of the colors affect your feelings for the overall art piece. In this video, a few art pieces were discussed such as “Ashes” created in 1894. This art piece is the representation of the relationship connection between a man and a woman, this art piece emphasizes sexuality and despite the togetherness of the couple you can see the loneliness and sadness both are feeling.
Abstract Expressionism and pop: Art of the 50’s and 60’s- In this video we see how abstract expressionism was born in AMerican and European art. This type of art was not made popular due to its non figurative and egocentric characters. The beings in this type of art were seen as inhumane and improper. This video discussed the life of the American artist Franz Kline, who was known for conventional landscapes. In the beginning of his artist career he was a figurative painter but then decided to move to abstract painting. “Scudera '' one of Franz Kline's last paintings, the background colors of the painting along with the painting's actual main idea kind of belonged together, the colors were intertwined in a way in which it is almost confusing to decipher the difference between the background and the main object.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings?
These videos relate to the readings because the readings also speak about the beginning of Abstract Expressionism and how it wasnt always accepted.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I liked both films although Abstract Expressionism and pop: Art of the 50’s and 60’s was my favorite out of the two because I found Franz Kline to be a very interesting artist with incredible artworks. His upbringing was also very interesting, I liked how he transitioned from different forms of art he didn't just explore one form of art.
