Olmec Mask (Olmec-style mask) - The Olmec Mask video is about an Aztec Temple in New Mexico city. Buried in these Aztec Temples are offerings including ceramic vessels, stone sculptures, obsidian blades, seashells, greenstone. The Omlec People also known as the “rubber people” were originally settled in Guatemala but during a tribute were imported to the gulf of Mexico.
Feathered Headdress- The feathered headdress was about the Moctezuma ll’s Headdress which was first discovered in an European inventory in 1596, it was acquired by Austrian Archduke Ferdinard ll Von Tyrol. This object was sent by Heran Cortes in Mesoamerica.
Owie Kimou, Portrait Mask- Baule lived in central Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa, there were 400,000 of them. They were known for their masquerade performances including dances, singing drumming and skits.
Bundu/ Sowei Helmet Mask- Sowei is a type of female healers/herbalists, they use Sowei as a type of medicine. These healers and herbalists are medicine which have a spiritual force, this masked when used in dance is used for the expression of spirit and pulls spiritual powers.
Female mask (chokwe peoples) - the Chokwe people, in the democratic Republic of Congo created a mask which would have been danced by a male dancer. The mask honored women, women who were young and fertile. This mask honored women who gave birth successfully.
Kanak Mourning Mask - The Kanak Mourning Mask, is a representation of New Caledonia chief. It's surrounded by hair, which is thought to be from people who were mourning the loss of their chief. This mask is said to be connected with the underwater world of the dead. Performing with this mask is supposed to underline the chief's abiding power.
Mask, Torres Strait- Is a number of different pieces which form the face of the mask this mask was made by an island in the Torres Strait. The mask has a human face, a turtle shell, and the body of the bird along with human hair. This mask was seen when performing, the face of a hero.
2) What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I loved these films!! I didn't know anything about spiritual masks. These masks represent too much culture, art and religion. They represent their performances and their beliefs. These readings add to my understanding of art concepts by further explaining their beliefs, performing acts and their traditions.
