A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
The artworks that made an impact on me were “The shores of capri “ and “portrait of a young girl”-1893 by Evelyn Rosmery Cary. Both these paintings were about women, “the shore of capri” show women all doing different tasks such as, laundry by the river, cleaning, gathering water ect. “Portrait of a young girl” is showing a young girl who also looks like she's been doing work or busy, her hair is messy and her face seems very tired. These made an impact on me because at the time, women weren't really valued so the fact these artists were appreciating women and the hard work they do.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
I feel connected to “ in court street”- 1934 by Julius Richter and “united” -1946 by Anthone H. Lindberg. Both these paintings are of cities, they depict big buildings and bridges. They show the busy cities. These paintings remind me of my home, Bronx, New York City. New York City is very different from  Buffalo and very similar to these paintings.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
I would like to know more about “white owl and beech tree Motif”- 1956 by Charles E Burchfield and “song of the telegraph”-1952  by Charles E Burchfield. Both these pieces show ghosts like figures torturing or haunting its surroundings. The surrounding also looks haunted and gloomy. I would like to know what inspired this piece and why did he create this piece. Also does this artist believe in ghosts or witches?

How art is made the World part 1

What are the most interesting facts you learned from the video?

The most interesting fact I learned is how people are depicted in artworks. usually in artworks humans are not depicted realistically. For examples, statues are to demostriaight human bodies,  but humans aren't made from concrete nor does a human stand still forever. When creating art about the human body is it very rare that they are realistic.

Why is our modern world dominated by images of the body that are unrealistic?

Our modern world is dominated by images of the body that are unrealistic because of our culture, the society in which we live in depict how we want to see and how we see the human body. Wanting art as the perfect imitation of life, but when realistic statues stopped being made, it was also discovered that humans have a "prime evil instinct to exaggerate". Statues were seen exaggerating, the bodies of an athlete, strong bodies with many muscles but also appeared relaxed. Polyclautes, divided the sections of the body, which was discovered that a real human can never have the same body type of the statue because of it perfection. The statue, was too proportionate, the muscles were too strong. Unreal-tic bodies of realities that are exaggeration. Humans don't like reality, so therefore we exaggerate bodies is art. To create physical perfection.

Module #4 Art materials

Kimberlin Gomez
Module #4

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I liked creating both the value scale and color wheel, I thought it was a different assignment that what we regularly do. And was a good change from watching videos and answering questions like the usual homework. I would like to do more work such as this.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I enjoyed working with acrylic paint, just because I don't use it alot. I enjoyed combining primary colors to create secondary colors.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
I think the most important discovery is that art is never going to be the exact same. For example my color range chart, I did a color range 5 times and though the levels of color were very similar none of them were ever the same.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important information I learned from watching these videos would have to be how to use the materials. While watching the color range video, I learned how to use my pencil to get the perfect shade of color that I want. If I was to use my pencil normally as if I was writing something, I wouldn't have gotten the same results of shading. I loved the pencil shading video, I thought it was informative and showed me exactly how to create my shade chart. But the primary color theory 2, video I didn't like. I didn't like that it wasnt that informative and it didn't really give me a clear format of how I should place my colors. To me the color placement was disorganized and didn't make sense.

Art Slideshow

Art Slideshow

The process of creating this slideshow was fairly simple. I used various of pictures which I already had on my camera roll along with pictures I took around campus. Around campus I found interesting things such as statues. The statues of the Bengal tiger in specific had a combination of elements including, lines, color, texture and forms. One oof my favorite picture of this slideshow is a picture I took while underwater of fishes, these fishes have the art elements of Lines, value, color and texture.

Module 3
The science of color perception

1. Describe Color and its effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
The world is full of different colors of all different tones. These colors bring out different emotions and different visual perception. Color is an illusion, which derives from the stimulation of photoreceptors.   The symbolization of the color red is of energy, strength, power and determination. Green means growth, harmony and safety, the color green in the advertisement gives the reader a sense of growth and hope of overcoming their obstacles. The color white means innocence, wholeness and completion

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
Meghan Sims, explained the way that cones react to different colors, tones and shades. Meghan Sims explains how every single color to her is seen as different shades of grades, but that because of the different shades of gray she can differentiate which color it is. This interests me because it's a good explanation of being color blind. Just because you're color blind doesn't mean you cant see the world in color, because if you can determine the relation of shades to the name of the color then you can learn which shades is what color.

3. In the video, what made the biggest impression on you in regards to color and Why?
The biggest impression that I had in regards to color in the video was the effect the color red can have on our emotions, feelings and actions. The color red can make us react very differently than the color white. The color red is a color that triggers violence in our minds, its scientifically proven that if your color is painted red you are more than likely to become a more violent person. The color white brings peace, calmness and tranquility. I found this interesting because when you actually think about it colors have the power to change your emotions.

Module #2

1. For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
CARTA: Evolutionary Origins of Art andAesthetics: Neurobiology, Neurology and Art and Aesthetics
  • The effect that art has on the human mind. And how we are unaware of that effect unless we think about it. Also how human art plays a part of the creation and development of art. The effect the brain has when viewing art.
  •  Ramanchandran's example of peak shift
  • The eight laws of art
  • Different philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, John Dewey, R.G Collington, ect
  • The different definitions of art all philosophers had
  • The different mindset and thinking the philosophers had
What the brain form : Art and Neuroscience
  • Concept of lines- how our brain depicts lines
  • Faces- trigger emotional responses
  • Everyone has a different definition of what is art

2. Which philosopher's theory on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosopher's name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.
The philosophers theory on aesthetics that I feel is the most important is Plato because not only was he an early philosopher but he was a founder of the thoughts of other philosophers. His opinion influenced greatly the beliefs of the philosophers after him. He was a teacher of the also very well known philosopher, Aristotle. He was alive during the classical period in Ancient Greece. Plato was very known for founding his Academy north of Athens and his dialogues about the idea of beauty. His beliefs were of a perfect state that must contain 4 qualities, wisdom, courage, self discipline and wise-decisions. Plato brought the question of what exactly can be considered art. For example he argued that there isn't any art to writing poetry, that the poet doesn't really even know if his statements are factual. He argued that poets only knowledge was how to imitate the appearance of a specific task is (ex. The task of being a husband)

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speaker's lecture?
Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art is very complex and specific. They both have great definitions of aesthetics and art. Both of these gentlemen made me believe that having your own personal definition is of great importance and in order to fully understand other definition of this concept you must create your own. What I found most interesting was Changeux's lecture was the Discovery of Art Composition regarding the Homo Sapiens, during this discussion Changeux compared art to human beings and this is what I found mind blowing. Because he was describing the human body as if it was a work of art. And since I am fairly new to the topic of art I've never heard anything like it. In  Ramachandran's lecture I found it interesting what he said about the brain and the effects that art has on it. I found this interesting because I never noticed this until now that I heard him speak about it.
4. How do the videos and articles relate to the readings in the text?
Both the articles and the videos are very similar, they both talked about artists and philosophers, and their opinions on art. These opinions shaped the way that art is viewed and how it defined today. They both discuss arts history and the importance of the way art has been shaped.
5. What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text?
The films and the article gave me a deeper understanding of art and aesthetics. After reading and watching the films I've created my own definition of what art and aesthetics is, with the help of the opinions of philosophers. I also found myself disagreeing with philosophers. For example I believe that poetry is a form or art, something which Plato disagreed heavily on.

Module #1

1. How was the process of creating the gmail account and setting up the blog?

The process of setting up a gmail account was very simple because I already had a personal gmail account. Setting up the blog was a little bit difficult because I was very confused and didn't know or understand what to do. Thankfully my friend who is also in the class helped me understand.

2. What do you expect to learn in this course?
I expect to gain overall knowledge on Art. I want to have an understanding of artist and different forms of art.

3. How do you feel about taking an online course?
Im very nervous because this is my first online course.

4. What are three things in the growth mindset (from step 3) videos do you believe most apply to you?
I believe three things in the growth mindset videos that apply to me the most are, connecting with your teacher makes challenges easier, as an education major I am a firm believer in the teacher- student relationship. I believe the relationship should remain neutral but the students should always be comfortable enough with the teacher to be able to ask questions etc. Being apart of a club that interest you can help a great deal when being away from home. Since you're away from home in a strange place and early  know anyone being apart of something can help you gain not only friends but just knowledge that's important to have. Also when studying I use this method a lot, repeating things 5-10 times can really help making information stick to your brain. For example after class when I get home I usually review the notes that I took throughout the day, this helps me memorize the information and also gain more understanding of the information.
